JoAnn’s computer

Last night, Lorena, Kelly, Christian, and I went over to Jim and JoAnn Waldo’s house again to hook up her new DSL broadband internet line.  It went surprisingly smoothly.  It is always fun to hang out and talk with them which we did until about 9:30.  When we got home, Christian, Kelly, and I read about half of chapter two of How to Win Friends and Influence People.  All of us are enjoyinging the book very much.  It is amazingly interesting even for kids and the concepts are great concepts.  I think this would a good book for us to read more than once.  Maybe we will make it our “begin the summer” read-aloud for a few years.

The cabinet guy came yesterday and put trim around many of the cabinets and Mark and his helpers poured the concrete for half of the new porch.  Today, they are going to put the forms up for the rest of the porch and set the island in the middle of the kitchen.  Tomorrow the counter tops arrive and Friday the rest of the new appliances arrive.  It is all coming together very fast now.

Memorial Day with the Joyce family

We had a nice weekend.  We had to stay out of the house Thursday, Friday, and Saturday so our new hardwood floor’s new Swedish finish would cure properly.  It is really toxic for the first twenty-four hours and just plain uncomfortable for a few days after that, so we just stayed away.  I mentioned last time that we spent a really great Thursday evening at Jim and JoAnn Waldo’s house, then went up to stay at Grandpa Milo and Grandma Sarah’s house in Tigard on Friday and Saturday nights.  We mostly just hung out, but got a chance to see the new mall in Lake Oswego.  Lorena enjoyed it so much, she took Kelly, Christian, and I home, then went back for several more hours.

We went to Gary and Brenda Joyce’s house on Memorial Day Monday for a barbeque.  There were a bunch of kids and other families there along with a whole lot more food than it makes sense to eat.  The kids played like maniacs while the grown-ups talked and talked and talked.  It was great to be with those people.  On the way back home to Albany, Lorena and I agreed that we need to make the effort to get together with them more often.

An evening with Jim and JoAnn Waldo

We had a fabulous evening last night with Jim and JoAnn Waldo.  They were kind enough to let us spend the night with last night because of the noxious nature of the finishing of our new hardwood floors.  JoAnn made up some awesome tacos that we ate with some salsa made by Lorena.  There was also an incredible fruit plate with fresh mango, strawberries, and watermelon, an all kinds of other good stuff–a veritable feast!  Jim got a brand new four-door Dodge pickup with a Cummins Diesel engine.  It is truly a work of art.  The kids recited their verses for the last time during the year, JoAnn played some music for us that was recorded by some of our friends in Wyoming, we played on her fabulous new computer and generally had just a great time.  I hope we can repay them in kind some day!

They will finish the floor today.  We are going to spend the evening in Tigard at Grandpa Milo and Grandma Sarah’s house so that I can work with a man from the U.S. Geological Survey on a vision system that they are going to helicopter into the Mount St. Helens volcano to take images of the changes that are happening there.  When we get back on Saturday afternoon, the house should be OK to inhabit again.

Finishing the floor

Tonight, we will spend the night with our good friends and neighbors, Jim and JoAnn Waldo because our new hardwood floor will be receiving a Swedish finish today and we will need to be out of the house for a day because of the noxious fumes created by the application process.  Tomorrow, they will put on a second coat, so we will probably run up to Portland to stay at Grandpa Milo and Grandma Sarah’s house for the evening.  We will be on our own because Grandpa Milo and Grandma Sarah are away on a trip to Maui and will not be back until Sunday.  We only have a few more weeks before the whole project is finished, but it is really starting to take shape already.  The quartz counter tops will arrive a week from today.  The rest of the new appliances will arrive a week after that.

The Pack meeting

Christian and I went to the Cub Scout Pack meeting last night and had a really great time. The Boy Scouts look like quite a good organization. We ordered Christian’s uniform and a subscription of Boys Life magazine. There will be some things he can do all summer long. This really should be quite a lot of fun.

We got our weekly newsletter today from HSLDA.  We were reminded that it is NOT too late to get send in photographs for the annual HSLDA photography contest.  The entries have to be in before the end of May.  I hope the kids take the time to prepare some entries.  We can send them in this weekend!

It’s Wet and it’s Cub Scouts Night

Today… is a regular day with nothing to do but watch the rain drip down the window and fix another math problem. Ahhhh… that’s the life. Actually today Christian gets to go to do Cub Scouts at the Church Gym down the road!! This is the second to the last week of school but it sure doesn’t look like summer outside to me. Of course it beats Texas where they are roasting like weenies on a wooden stick but we are swimming like wet dogs in a mid-Atlantic whirpool (notice the witty analogies)

Cub scouts start tonight

I talked to the Cub Scout master last night.  He invited Christian and I to go to the meeting they are having tonight at a local church.  It is the last meeting of the school year where they give out the awards and talk about the plans for this summer.  We will get Christian signed up tonight.  On Saturday, we will drive up to Salem to buy his uniform and look around the Scout Store there.  Christian and I are both looking forward to this very much.  Christian will only be in Cub Scouts for about half a year.  He will be a Webelo really.  That is the group that is transitioning between Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts.  We have to decide whether Christian wants to try to win all the merit badges to be able to get the high award of the Cub Scouts or whether he wants to just get acclimated with to prepare himself to move on to Boy Scouts.  We will see what happens.

Fred’s funeral

Lorena and the kids are going to Fred Wright’s funeral in Portland this morning with Tony, Martha, and Josh.  He was a good and faithful man.  It will be good for all of them to go.  I wish I could be there, too.  Kelly’s Spring Piano Recital was yesterday.  She did a great job.  She was sad because she had not been there the whole year, so she did not get her normal awards.  That provided us all with an opportunity to think and discuss those things for which we can be grateful.  It really was sad that Kelly did not get those awards, but the price of those awards would have been not ever having the opportunity to meet Ethne, Brook, Blair, David, Daniel, and all our other friends in Texas.

Today, I got in touch with the leader of the local Cub Scout Pack.  I think it will be an excellent thing for Christian.  It looks like there is only one more meeting for this year, but I went to the web site and saw their very cool patches.  We are very much looking forward to participating in Cub Scouts as soon as we get the chance.  I also bought How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie from Amazon this morning.  I thought it might be a good idea to read through that with the kids.  It has its issues, but it also discusses some great concepts and people skills.  We will read it aloud so we can discuss it as we go.

Funeral and Recital

Today Mom, Christian and I are going to Fred Wright’s funeral in Portland. Tony and Martha Nelson are going to take us along and Christian and I are going to bring our school. Christian is going to join the Boy Scouts and he is all fired up about it. So am I, there are plenty of cute boys in boy scouts right?(: (kidding) It is raining right now. We thought it was going to be nice all month but I guess not. I had my recital yesterday that was really fun. There were some kids who were VERY good there. I played Sonatina in D Major by George Anton Benda and Celebration, a concerto by Lynn Freeman Olson. At the end we had a Blues Jam and I played in it. That sounded really cool and it was lots of fun. Dad should be posting more pictures soon. All for now!

Last part of the homeschool year 2005/2006

Last night, Christian and I finished off the last of the Singapore Mental Math and the last set of words from Spelling Power for this year. He missed a couple of spelling words, so we will have one or two more very short days of spelling before we are completely finished with that. The big push right now is to finish up the annual research reports. The rough and first drafts are complete. It is now time to polish the final products and publish them.

The hardwood floor in the living room went down yesterday, so the only flooring left to put down is the hardwood for the dining room. I am not sure what will come next, but I think it will be the finishing of the floors and the placing of the rest of the cabinets. The cabinets that are in place now are mostly the ones that take the counter tops. When the rest are in place, we will have a much better sense for the final appearance of the kitchen. Of course, we really will not know how it will be until the new appliances are here and the floor is finished.

Also, here is a picture of our new cooktop from Thermador:

Our new cooktop

The new stove

Kelly wrote a comment yesterday:

“The Kitchen looks GREAT!!! They came in with the new stove today. Mom has been staring at her kitchen all morning long.”

It is true. The new Thermador Professional stove top is just awesome. It features Thermador‘s signature 1955 blue knobs. The most important part of this whole deal is that Lorena is very happy with her new kitchen.

Homeschool planning

It is going to be nice when our remodel of the kitchen is finished and school is out for the summer. My desire is to do some more serious homeschool and Linux blogging, but I have not been able to find the time, lately. There is time to write or to investigate, but not to do both. I hope that some of my future topics include the Teaching Textbooks math program we just got for Kelly. She has only done a couple of lessons so far, but she has enjoyed them thoroughly. We will probably have both Kelly and Christian do the program next year. In addition to that, I want to do a good review of the new Ubuntu that is coming out this fall for how well it serves us in our homeschool. We have been using Ubuntu for about a year and a half now for homeschool and it is great.

The kids are now using OpenOffice.org Write for doing their annual research reports. This year, they are using the automatic table of contents generator which works very nicely. Next year, Kelly will be doing either footnotes or endnotes that we hope to accomodate with the program. We already use OpenOffice.org Calc to organize our weekly schedule. I might take a look at one of the Calendar applications like Sunbird or Lightning, but the Calc method has worked so well that there is no significant reason to change at this point.

The hardwood floor and cabinet bases are now installed in the kitchen. The stove top should arrive early this morning followed by the quartz counter top people so they can take some measurements. There is still a lot to do on both the inside and the outside before it will all be finished. The porch, the fence, the upstairs window, several yards of concrete porch and patio, more hardwood floor and hardwood floor finishing, the rest of the new appliances, counter top installation, and the above the counter cabinets as well as a bunch of stuff I am sure I am forgetting still need to be installed.

Barbeque with Ryan and Jeannie

We went to dinner at Ryan and Jeannie Harris’ house after work last night.  It was really nice because the kitchen iss all torn up at our house.  Jim and Dana Hamilton were there with their little son, Reese.  Kelly and Christian were sad because they thought there would be no kids there, but a two year old is much better than nothing.  Especially a cute one like Reese.  We had a great time and ate some great food.

The Larsons Decide to Homeschool and I get a Real Live Job

I got a small job at the neighbor’s watering their plants for a week while they are gone to Cancun. That and my new mathematics program will keep me busy. The new program is called Teaching Textbooks and it includes a textbook, CD-roms that are really cool because it has a teacher that explains everything that is in the textbook really well, correction CDs that also have a teacher that explains the problem to me, and a teacher’s guide. I already have done the first lesson. Today I accidentaly got up almost a HALF HOUR late! (tee hee) so I am going to try and get everything done quickly. Oh, I almost forgot the most important thing! Dad talked to the Larsons last night and they said that they were planning on homeschooling their twins David and Daniel. They will be using Sonlight Core 6 next year. I have almost finished that and will go on to Sonlight Core 7 (which is World History Part 2) next year! Christian will be using Sonlight Core 5, the same one that I used when we first started with homeschool.

A yard work weekend

On Saturday morning, Christian and I walked up to Ryan Harris’ house to help him a little bit with the pouring of his new sidewalk.  After that, we went home and spent most of the day spreading bark dust.  Christian was not really feeling to well; I think there is some kind of bug going around because Kelly felt the same way last week.  Progress continues on the house and it is really fun to watch.  In addition, the kids are making progress on their annual research reports.  I will mail them out or post them here as soon as they are finished.

Hola

Yesterday everyone in Mexico celebrated Mother’s Day. We are supposed to do it on Sunday buuuut… Mom wants flowers but since we are getting a remodel Dad says that she can’t get her anything for five more years.(: Thanks to everyone in Mexico who reads this blog. (Gracias a todos en Mexico que leen mi blog.) I thought no one read it. Sorry it’s not in Spanish. Mi espaniol no esta muy bien pero estoy trabajando en eso. Adios!

Living with the remodel

The kitchen is all torn up with most of the electricity turned off for the remodel, so we got some Kentucky Fried Chicken and ate dinner up in the bonus room when Joe Layman and Dellas Waldo came over last night.  We had a great time.  The drywall is in place and the painting should happen today.  On Monday, the hardwood will go into the kitchen with the cabinets arriving there on Tuesday and the stovetop early Wednesday morning so the measurements can be taken for the quartz counter top on Wednesday at 9:00 AM.  It is a little bit of a mess, but it surely is fun to watch the progress.  We are still taking pictures and still planning to post them when we get a little time.

Posting pictures

Christian has been taking some pictures of our home as it is being remodeled.  I have not yet showed Kelly or Christian how to prepare and upload photos to our website.  I need to do that and believe tonight would be a good night to start.

The house is coming along great.  The foundation for the little addition is in along with the walls and roof for that part of the house.  I think the next thing that will happen is the knocking out of the inner walls and the preparation of everything inside so the cabinet maker can come and install the cabinets.  Christian will take more pictures of that as we go along so it will be quite nice for all of us if both Kelly and Christian learn how to post them.

hmmm…
