We talked last night about what Kelly and Christian are planning to do this summer. The main things include Kelly’s annual Fourth of July parade, the local library talent show, and lots of reading. Next year, they are going to take singing lessons from Bryce Cloyd. I mentioned that a good goal for their class might be to get something prepared for next summer’s talent show. Kelly could play the keyboard, Christian could play the guitar, and they could both sing. I think it would be very nice.
Year: 2006 Page 10 of 15
Tony, Martha, and Josh came over with us last night to get gas going to our new range top. We now have everything working in the kitchen except the range hood. After that, all that is needed are the backsplash, pot filler faucet, replacement counter top for the one that is bad, the hood, the cabinet doors, and a little touch-up work on the hardwood floors. After that, I think the only thing left is some stuff under the house, the fence, the new door and window, and the porch!
Both Christian and Kelly have finished their annual research reports and I have posted them on the internet in PDF format. You can look at them here. The each did a great job. That pretty much wraps up the heavy part of homeschool. All we have left is a little math for each of them, filming of the bible memorization, and some Spanish. We will try to finish up the math this summer. We do not normally plan to do anything during the summer, but because of the disruption caused by the move to Texas, we will do a couple minor things to get back on schedule. Of course we will do Marvis Blinkin’ as in every other summer, but also Christian will continue with Rosetta Stone Spanish and Kelly will continue with Teaching Textbooks Pre-algegra.
Christian and I are just about done with our reading reports. We’ll just go through them once more I think and then we can print them out and send them to everyone. Christian did the Internal Combustion Engine and I did a comparison of the Pyramids of Egypt to the Pyramids of Latin America. Last year Christian did a report on Flight and I did a report on Newspapers. I’m already thinking of what I should do next year. Maybe the history of door knobs or something interesting like that. Yesterday, after meeting we went to the Home Depot with Mom and Dad and then we came home and played outside for the rest of the day. It was fun. Today we will finish up our reading and history ): and then maybe make a list of all our books.
UPDATE
We are also planning to do our math and Spanish. (Don’t worry Dad)
All of the reading and reporting for the school year is pretty much done. All there is left to do is put the final touch on the annual reports, do some math and Spanish, and get ready for Marvis Blinkin’. Hopefully, the kids will run down to the library today to get their summer reading cards along with enough books to get them started. We are on a big push now to get the bonus room cleaned up and ready for the summer. Part of that is getting an inventory of all the books in the Sonlight and other programs so we can know what to order for next year.
Tony, Martha, and Josh came over yesterday afternoon and we had a nice time talking the them. I showed them how to use Skype. I am completely amazed with Skype. It really is better for us than the telephone for our calls to Mexico. When we get the wireless headset, it will even be better for our domestic long distance calls. Tony says he is going to get DSL put in at his house so they can use it for their long distance.
Monday is just about the last day of school! We have 5 gazillion plans for the summer. Last summer we didn’t play outside as much but we sat around inside and read or played on the computer. This summer will be different. I resolve to play tag, hide and go seek, capture the flag, kickball and anything else that is outside. We are going to do the Independence Day Parade, the Summer Reading Program, and all the cool stuff that they have at the library (including the Albany Idol Competition) I are going to pick berries, ride bikes, swim in the pool and read The King of the Trees. I think we are ready for the summer. But I’m a little sad about the ending of the school year. It always gets so familiar and the books are so good and everything… and then summer comes.
Mom’s kitchen is looking awesome. We all can’t wait until it’s done! They put the Quartz Countertops on yesterday and like Dad said, they will bring most of the appliances today!! I think Mom LOoooooooooooooooooooooves her kitchen.
Oh, one more thing. To our family and friends who read this blog (besides Mom and Dad and Christian) on behalf of Christian, Hannah, Hailey, and Jacob, Kaktus Kids would like to offer you an oppurtunity to get our magazine!! (we are very desperate! Please send us some mag material!) Do all of you read it?
The new counter tops look great. One of them was cut wrong so we will have to get a new one sometime next week, but they are absolutely beautiful. We are so happy that we went with quartz instead of granite. Today, all the rest of the appliances are supposed to arrive. That includes the refrigerator, the oven, the microwave, the warmer, the dishwasher, and the all important stove hood. The electrician is supposed to be there on Monday and the plumber is scheduled for Tuesday. The kitchen could be complete before next weekend if the replacement counter top arrives on time.
Christian and I installed the new Ubuntu Linux Dapper Drake on our homeschool computer last night. It is really amazing. All that things that were a struggle before just loaded up and ran this time. That includes all the DVD stuff, Flash for the Firefox browser, email, networking, etc. The one disappointment is that the version of Skype we have on Linux does not work as well as the one on windows, but that is a minor thing. I forgot to try printing with our printer, but I have never had any problems with that on previous version, so I doubt if it will be much of a problem on this one.
We had a nice bible study last night and I set Lorena up to be able to talk to her mother over the computer via Skype. The new version of Ubuntu Linux called Dapper Duck comes out today. I am currently downloading it so we can upgrade our linux computer. We are waiting for the installation of the new quartz countertops today and the new appliances tomorrow. Hopefully, we will have a working kitchen by the weekend.
Last night, Lorena, Kelly, Christian, and I went over to Jim and JoAnn Waldo’s house again to hook up her new DSL broadband internet line. It went surprisingly smoothly. It is always fun to hang out and talk with them which we did until about 9:30. When we got home, Christian, Kelly, and I read about half of chapter two of How to Win Friends and Influence People. All of us are enjoyinging the book very much. It is amazingly interesting even for kids and the concepts are great concepts. I think this would a good book for us to read more than once. Maybe we will make it our “begin the summer” read-aloud for a few years.
The cabinet guy came yesterday and put trim around many of the cabinets and Mark and his helpers poured the concrete for half of the new porch. Today, they are going to put the forms up for the rest of the porch and set the island in the middle of the kitchen. Tomorrow the counter tops arrive and Friday the rest of the new appliances arrive. It is all coming together very fast now.
We had a nice weekend. We had to stay out of the house Thursday, Friday, and Saturday so our new hardwood floor’s new Swedish finish would cure properly. It is really toxic for the first twenty-four hours and just plain uncomfortable for a few days after that, so we just stayed away. I mentioned last time that we spent a really great Thursday evening at Jim and JoAnn Waldo’s house, then went up to stay at Grandpa Milo and Grandma Sarah’s house in Tigard on Friday and Saturday nights. We mostly just hung out, but got a chance to see the new mall in Lake Oswego. Lorena enjoyed it so much, she took Kelly, Christian, and I home, then went back for several more hours.
We went to Gary and Brenda Joyce’s house on Memorial Day Monday for a barbeque. There were a bunch of kids and other families there along with a whole lot more food than it makes sense to eat. The kids played like maniacs while the grown-ups talked and talked and talked. It was great to be with those people. On the way back home to Albany, Lorena and I agreed that we need to make the effort to get together with them more often.
We had a fabulous evening last night with Jim and JoAnn Waldo. They were kind enough to let us spend the night with last night because of the noxious nature of the finishing of our new hardwood floors. JoAnn made up some awesome tacos that we ate with some salsa made by Lorena. There was also an incredible fruit plate with fresh mango, strawberries, and watermelon, an all kinds of other good stuff–a veritable feast! Jim got a brand new four-door Dodge pickup with a Cummins Diesel engine. It is truly a work of art. The kids recited their verses for the last time during the year, JoAnn played some music for us that was recorded by some of our friends in Wyoming, we played on her fabulous new computer and generally had just a great time. I hope we can repay them in kind some day!
They will finish the floor today. We are going to spend the evening in Tigard at Grandpa Milo and Grandma Sarah’s house so that I can work with a man from the U.S. Geological Survey on a vision system that they are going to helicopter into the Mount St. Helens volcano to take images of the changes that are happening there. When we get back on Saturday afternoon, the house should be OK to inhabit again.
Tonight, we will spend the night with our good friends and neighbors, Jim and JoAnn Waldo because our new hardwood floor will be receiving a Swedish finish today and we will need to be out of the house for a day because of the noxious fumes created by the application process. Tomorrow, they will put on a second coat, so we will probably run up to Portland to stay at Grandpa Milo and Grandma Sarah’s house for the evening. We will be on our own because Grandpa Milo and Grandma Sarah are away on a trip to Maui and will not be back until Sunday. We only have a few more weeks before the whole project is finished, but it is really starting to take shape already. The quartz counter tops will arrive a week from today. The rest of the new appliances will arrive a week after that.
Christian and I went to the Cub Scout Pack meeting last night and had a really great time. The Boy Scouts look like quite a good organization. We ordered Christian’s uniform and a subscription of Boys Life magazine. There will be some things he can do all summer long. This really should be quite a lot of fun.
We got our weekly newsletter today from HSLDA. We were reminded that it is NOT too late to get send in photographs for the annual HSLDA photography contest. The entries have to be in before the end of May. I hope the kids take the time to prepare some entries. We can send them in this weekend!
Today… is a regular day with nothing to do but watch the rain drip down the window and fix another math problem. Ahhhh… that’s the life. Actually today Christian gets to go to do Cub Scouts at the Church Gym down the road!! This is the second to the last week of school but it sure doesn’t look like summer outside to me. Of course it beats Texas where they are roasting like weenies on a wooden stick but we are swimming like wet dogs in a mid-Atlantic whirpool (notice the witty analogies)
I talked to the Cub Scout master last night. He invited Christian and I to go to the meeting they are having tonight at a local church. It is the last meeting of the school year where they give out the awards and talk about the plans for this summer. We will get Christian signed up tonight. On Saturday, we will drive up to Salem to buy his uniform and look around the Scout Store there. Christian and I are both looking forward to this very much. Christian will only be in Cub Scouts for about half a year. He will be a Webelo really. That is the group that is transitioning between Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. We have to decide whether Christian wants to try to win all the merit badges to be able to get the high award of the Cub Scouts or whether he wants to just get acclimated with to prepare himself to move on to Boy Scouts. We will see what happens.
Lorena and the kids are going to Fred Wright’s funeral in Portland this morning with Tony, Martha, and Josh. He was a good and faithful man. It will be good for all of them to go. I wish I could be there, too. Kelly’s Spring Piano Recital was yesterday. She did a great job. She was sad because she had not been there the whole year, so she did not get her normal awards. That provided us all with an opportunity to think and discuss those things for which we can be grateful. It really was sad that Kelly did not get those awards, but the price of those awards would have been not ever having the opportunity to meet Ethne, Brook, Blair, David, Daniel, and all our other friends in Texas.
Today, I got in touch with the leader of the local Cub Scout Pack. I think it will be an excellent thing for Christian. It looks like there is only one more meeting for this year, but I went to the web site and saw their very cool patches. We are very much looking forward to participating in Cub Scouts as soon as we get the chance. I also bought How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie from Amazon this morning. I thought it might be a good idea to read through that with the kids. It has its issues, but it also discusses some great concepts and people skills. We will read it aloud so we can discuss it as we go.
Today Mom, Christian and I are going to Fred Wright’s funeral in Portland. Tony and Martha Nelson are going to take us along and Christian and I are going to bring our school. Christian is going to join the Boy Scouts and he is all fired up about it. So am I, there are plenty of cute boys in boy scouts right?(: (kidding) It is raining right now. We thought it was going to be nice all month but I guess not. I had my recital yesterday that was really fun. There were some kids who were VERY good there. I played Sonatina in D Major by George Anton Benda and Celebration, a concerto by Lynn Freeman Olson. At the end we had a Blues Jam and I played in it. That sounded really cool and it was lots of fun. Dad should be posting more pictures soon. All for now!
Homeschool read through the bible
I have made various attempts to read all the way through the bible, but have failed for a number of reasons. One of those is that I have not kept very good track of my reading. Therefore, I am going to attempt to keep track here. Here is a link to the place where I do my online reading:

Last night, Christian and I finished off the last of the Singapore Mental Math and the last set of words from Spelling Power for this year. He missed a couple of spelling words, so we will have one or two more very short days of spelling before we are completely finished with that. The big push right now is to finish up the annual research reports. The rough and first drafts are complete. It is now time to polish the final products and publish them.
The hardwood floor in the living room went down yesterday, so the only flooring left to put down is the hardwood for the dining room. I am not sure what will come next, but I think it will be the finishing of the floors and the placing of the rest of the cabinets. The cabinets that are in place now are mostly the ones that take the counter tops. When the rest are in place, we will have a much better sense for the final appearance of the kitchen. Of course, we really will not know how it will be until the new appliances are here and the floor is finished.
Also, here is a picture of our new cooktop from Thermador:
Kelly wrote a comment yesterday:
“The Kitchen looks GREAT!!! They came in with the new stove today. Mom has been staring at her kitchen all morning long.”
It is true. The new Thermador Professional stove top is just awesome. It features Thermador‘s signature 1955 blue knobs. The most important part of this whole deal is that Lorena is very happy with her new kitchen.
