A new cellphone

We went into Costco on Saturday and signed up for another couple of years of service with our provider by getting new cellphones for Lorena and I.  It is amazing how good they are.  We have never gotten a cellphone that was nice enough to suggest that we might have actually paid for it, but with my new, Dave Ramsey mentality, I am almost embarrassed to pull this new phone out.  This is also the first time we got phones that were not the clam shell style.  Even though the economy is in the tank–well, maybe, especially because the economy is in the tank, it is cool to have new stuff.  Even more so because it is shiny.

  1. Shiny new technology? Yep, that’s cool.

I just got my first cell phone for Christmas, and it’s the clam shell style… but it’s super cool in my book because, well, it’s shiny new technology [smile].

Enjoy your new phones! May they serve you well.

Thanks Luke. Shiny is shiny. It is only those insidious cultural influences that make us judgmental about clam shells being good or bad. I can tell I am getting way to bourgeois. It has dawned on me that the reason I now look down on clam shells is because I no longer have one!

Way too funny! John came home with a new ‘slide’ yesterday. Red, too! I am thinking, now what are we going to do with the one that you had? We had just gotten that one around Christmas because he couldn’t stand that his clamshell type we had had for over 2 years would indescriminately take pictures (cracked me up, but not him 🙂 ~ said the thing was possessed, haha) whenever it felt like it, and because Emma was soon to become a licensed driver. So, in addition to 4 activated cell phones in the house (one clamshell [mine], one slide, two little flips [Sony Ericsson W350]), we now have one unused posessed clamshell phone, and one poor little Sony Ericsson W350 skinny phone sitting around without SIM cards waiting for the boys to get old enough and to have enough activities away from home to warrent a phone. Hmmm, who will get the picture-taking happy one?

  4. Ruthie

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that it is a very SHINY red!

What kind of phone is it? Looks really nice. I’ve been looking at Verizon for one but haven’t found one that I like too well. Maybe I’m being too picky and want a phone with just the right features, good reception and lightweight.

We are running into those EXACT same problems in our household Ruthie. Those kids start getting expensive right around Junior High. It does not look like it is going to get any cheaper for a good number of years, but what are you going to do? You love ’em and it is worth it, but nobody ever said is was going to be cheap!

Youngin, it was a special deal that I think is only available at CostCo. It is a Samsung Sway. Give us the word and we will take you in there! Free is a good price. We were going to use the service anyway because everyone we know is on Verizon.

  7. Ken, I love the way you word things! I suppose I’ve never had a phone nice enough that anyone would think I paid for it either, and it will only get worse. We used to have two phones on my account, but when the contract expired we cancelled one, but the extra (old) phone was mine to keep. That means that when my current phone breaks, I’ll have a new “older” spare to use. Cheap, cheap, cheap.

I know EXACTLY how that is Lynn. We were well past the “new every two” date when we got these phones. The first time we checked, Verizon wanted us to pay for the second phone, so we just stuck with what we had. Then the screen on Lorena’s phone broke. We still have a couple of months to wait before we can get the kids phone replaced.
