Kelly goes to the opera with Aunt Julia and Uncle Rich

Kelly goes to the opera in Seattle with Uncle Rich and Aunt JuliaAunt Julia and Uncle Rich drove up to Seattle to see the opera last night. I got Kelly a ticket as a gift for surviving a period of insane school intensity. I think she is finally over the hump and has figured out both what is required, but also that it is also possible to for her to do what is required and have a life. That is actually, I think, a very big and important breakthrough.

Kelly bought a new dress for the affair and Uncle Rich and Aunt Julia took her to a really nice dinner. Kelly was a wildly big fan of her Aunt and Uncle before the opera, but even more so now. Her is Aunt Julia’s very insightful quote about the opera:

It was great. Mary Queen of Scots gets killed in the end by the declaration of the evil queen Elizabeth after much hand wringing, agony and weeping.

Just so. That would probably be a good description of many operas if you switched the names out and maybe added a little sword waving and romance.

Thank you Uncle Rich and Aunt Julia. We are grateful for your efforts on our daughter’s behalf. The only thing that might have made it just a little bit better is if it would have been a Russian opera!

Graduation visitors

Day 991 of 1000

Grandpa Milo, Aunt Julia, and Gladys visit for the kids graduation in North CarolinaI am going to write a few posts over the next few days about the graduations that occurred on May 9th (Christian) and May 10th (Kelly).  We thoroughly enjoyed all of it.  I thought I would start off with our visitors.  Aunt Julia was very kind to fly out with Grandpa Milo.  It would not have been possible otherwise.  We were very much humbled and impressed with the care Aunt Julia showed toward Grandpa Milo with the current state of his memory.  She gave us a very good lesson in how to think about all this and particularly, how to treat a person with this condition and enjoy them in their current frame of mind.  For his part, Grandpa Milo was an enormous addition to the celebration.  We can only imagine how much impoverished the event would have been without his presence.

Grandma Sarah, the great higher education advocate in our family could not attend, but was here in spirit.  Even though our dear friend Gladys would have been a fabulous addition to the party if Grandma Sarah would have been able to make it, she was absolutely essential in Grandma Sarah’s absence.  She is so kind and accomplished in her treatment of people, especially in these kinds of celebrations, we could not have done it this nicely without her.  Beside listening to everyone, helping out in every way she can, and always saying the uplifting thing, she (as always) did one other thing that brought great joy to the festivities: She truly enjoyed herself and had a smile on her face the whole time.

I will talk a little bit more about the events of the weekend in subsequent posts, but for this post, we just want to thank Grandpa Milo, Aunt Julia, and Gladys who made such a great effort to be with us to celebrate the kids graduation.

Aunt Julia has a birthday

Day 777 of 1000

Aunt Julia has a birthdayAunt Julia had a birthday last week. I wrote her an email note. We both marveled out how good it is to be in our 50’s. I never would have imagined that I would enjoy this age so much. I kind of get the sense that the 60’s will be even better. This is especially true as our kids get to the end of their teen years and struggle to figure out what they should do, where they should go, the whole marriage thing, how to make a living, whether to continue their education, and etc., and etc. and etc. That is a great time to be alive, too, but much harder in many, many ways. Happy Birthday Aunt Julia.

P.S.  This picture is not really a picture from this birthday.  I found it, thought it looked good and needed something for this blog post.  Who knows when or where it was taken.
