It is February and the sun is shining in Oregon — what to do?

Sunshine in Oregon in February 2015I have moved away from Oregon what seems like enumerable times. Every time I return I am amazed by Oregon’s unparalleled beauty, the freshness of the air and the rain in the Willamette Valley. Up until now, my thoughts after a couple of weeks in the state have generally been, “I do not remember it raining this much.” Now, though, on the way up to Oregon from Tempe, Arizona through California we drove on dry pavement and have had several days of the couple of weeks we have been here with sunny days–I took the picture in the post out the window of our apartment. There is not a cloud in the sky. I think the East Coast is getting all our precipitation. This does not bode well for the coming summer. There appears to be almost no snow pack in the mountains which means low water levels in rivers and lakes and drought in Oregon. We have even seen rationed water here in the summer under these conditions.

The other thing that seems to get a little more intense every time we return is the coarse political and social environment in the state. Assisted suicide is legal here. Think of that. Assisted suicide–something that not so long ago would have been called murder. I would expect the same kind of abuse that has occurred in Holland with euthanasia will soon come here. Oregon has some of the least restrictive abortion laws in the country along with a high abortion rate. Any place that makes it legal to kill babies, the hope of the future, is in big trouble even if you are not talking about the immorality of the practice. Marijuana will be legal in that state starting later this year. Oregon has dropped to the bottom third in terms of educational performance from a very high rank a couple of decades ago and they continue to drop. The governor who presided over much of this mess resigned in disgrace last week, only to be replaced by the avowed bi-sexual Secretary of State. Homosexual unions are legally and oxymoronically called “marriages” in Oregon. And there is much more including it status as one of the most unchurched states in the Union and the abject failure of their Obamacare implementation.

Our plan has been to look for a home to buy here in Oregon. We are going to take that very slowly now that I am reminded of how it is here. The intolerance toward “my kind” here is palpable. I have a commitment to be here for awhile so we need to make some decisions about how to meet that commitment. If something does not go sideways, we have our house sold, so we have to do something before too long. We are in a nice apartment close to my work, so we will take our time and see what happens. Right now, on Sunday morning, it is funny that I am missing the crazy good biscuits they make at McDonalds in North Carolina. It seems like they just do not have the formula right out west.

All moved in

Cats above cupboards in new apartment
We are all moved in to our new apartment in Wilsonville. The cats have found a new perch because there are no really good places to hide with no furniture yet. I hope this means I will be able to return to regular blogging on regular topics within a week or so and even maybe one or two this weekend.

Thinking about the return to Oregon

Lorena and I have had lots of time to reflect about our return to Oregon. We thought about moves to Arizona and Texas before we settled on Oregon. Now it just feels right. There was really no good reason to stay in North Carolina even though we loved our time here. Things just did not work out in any place but Oregon. Now that we are settled, it just feels great to be going home. There is no place on earth we think is more beautiful (of course that is a religious discussion), we understand the culture, we know our way around and we will be much closer to the kids. It is funny how, when you get away from a place you have lived and understand, it is hard to hear what other people think about the place. It is not so much that others do not have valid opinions, it is that most of them only know part of the story and the parts they do know are often wrong. Outside of the obviously backward political thinking in the state, there is no better place of with which we are acquainted (with the exception of Monterrey) on just about every level. We know that is just for us and we understand why other people like other places better, but we are Oregonians.

Wrapping it up – Why we love North Carolina

We went to our last Wednesday night bible study before out move last night. It is in Spanish and we will be leaving some dear friends behind when we move. Lorena and I look forward to our return to Oregon, but have talked about our time in North Carolina a lot over the last few weeks. We have been here for seven years and are leaving for work, proximity to family and for fellowship, but will always love North Carolina in general and Raleigh in particular very, very much.

We have made many, many good, life-long friends here. They, by themselves are reason to love North Carolina forever. There are just so many other things we love, they are too numerous to list, but I thought I would list just a few:

  • People still say please, thank you, yes ma’am and yes sir.
  • People wave and greet you in the neighborhood, grocery stores, in the street and everywhere else they get the chance.
  • The beautiful deciduous trees are nothing short of amazing.
  • Raleigh is the best small city in the country. Not Durham, not Cary, not Chapel Hill, not Charlotte, but Raleigh.
  • Charlotte. It is not Raleigh, but it IS Charlotte and that is a very good thing.
  • Cookout.
  • Bojangles.
  • Wake Technical Community College.
  • North Carolina State University.
  • The Hunt Library at NCSU.
  • The Hill Library at NCSU.
  • Cameron Village.
  • The Appalachians. Westerns have a tendency to act disdainful toward these smaller mountains in the East. They are wrong.
  • Kitty hawk and the beaches.
  • The Durham Performing Arts Center.
  • North Carolina is friendly to homeschoolers.
  • RDU is the very best airport in the country.
  • Values.
  • The Krispy Kreme run.
  • Research Triangle Park.
  • Great neighbors in our great neighborhood.
  • Fort Bragg and the Special Forces Museums.

I have missed a lot because I am on the run, so I reserve the right to come back and add to this list.

Christian’s new stuff

Christian's new lamp and guitar standI drove down from Prescott to Phoenix last night to spend the weekend with Christian at his apartment in Tempe. We have been out shopping all day. He spent less than $50 to buy a coffee table, a side table for the sofa and a computer monitor table. Then today, we went out and he bought a guitar stand, a desk lamp, a floor lamp and a hand vacuum. We had a great time. He is now heading out to a game not at his friends house while I hold down the fort in is apartment and get some work done. Tomorrow we get to go to meeting and hang out together again.

We went to Jack-in-the-Box today for dinner. We had a teriyaki rice bowl and a taco. What other fast food place in the world serves rice bowls and tacos. And the tacos are not just any tacos. The are the really greasy, tasty ones you can only get at Jack-in-the-Box. Christian was kind of sad I had not introduced him to haute cuisine of fast food earlier. The reality is, we ate it all the time when we were in Albany, he just liked the sourdough burgers back in those days so he never learned. Now he knows.

A bright sunny, crisp day in Raleigh

Christmas morning 2014 - View out the screen porch

The sun is shining, the air is crisp and the sky is blue on this beautiful Christmas day in Raleigh. We have had snow and rain on Christmas day in past years. I like them both, but this is very nice, too. I am getting a little nostalgic. This might be our last holiday season in Raleigh. The picture above is a view from the screen porch. The leaves have all fallen from the deciduous trees so we can see through to the blue sky a little better. The picture below is a view from the bonus room where my “work at home” office is located. If we go, I will miss it all. A lot.

Stay at home wives (not just moms) are essential

Charles Murray, co-author of one of our favorite books, The Bell Curve, makes some very cogent observations about the importance of stay at home wives and their great contribution to American society in this article at the American Enterprise Institute website. He very carefully makes the distinction between stay at home wives and stay at home moms, then says this:

The point is that many of the important forms of social capital take more time than a person holding a full-time job can afford. Who has been the primary engine for creating America’s social capital throughout its history, making our civil society one of the sociological wonders of the world? People without full-time jobs. The overwhelming majority of those people have been wives.

This seems precisely right. Murray acknowledges that stay at home wifehood is not for everyone and not even possible in many cases. It is obviously true that stay at home wives are even less understood and appreciated in our society than stay at home moms. It also seems obviously true that they contribute greatly to our society and are made possible by marriage as it has been practiced in America up until about twenty years ago.  It is a great article and very timely for Lorena and I now that we are empty nesters. Lorena is trying to figure out what to do next (I need and want to keep working). These are not easy things to figure out.

Raleigh living

Every time I think I want to leave Raleigh, Lorena sends me a picture of the view from our back patio and I change my mind. It might not be to everyone’s taste, but we really like it. Lorena gets her hot summers. We get four distinct seasons with a little snow in the winter. It is ALL good.

Getting out the product

The small team of engineers with whom I work spent last week, the entire weekend and yesterday putting the final touches on two of the retinal imaging cameras we designed so they can be shown at a conference in Colorado starting tomorrow. Everyone who has done real engineering has participated in this type of sprint to the finish. Really, I do not get a lot of satisfaction out of my work unless I get to do something like this a couple of times per year. We worked 16 hour days and barely made it, but the cameras will do well at the show.

The times when I work hard like this are the times I remember and cherish most about my work life. These times are when big advances are made in product understanding and, more importantly, lasting friendships are built. I love that. At the same time, now we are all completely fried. One of the guys took the day off. I am going to work on my really fun programming project (cameras, Python, SWIG and C/C++) and get back to blogging. We will have to work hard until Christmas, then take it up again for a rush to another product milestone in March, then it will be on to a new product for me.

So, that is why I have missed a few days of blogging. I hope to continue my Our Homeschool Story tomorrow.

Winter semester with new classes for Lorena and a new air conditioner for the house

New air conditioner (sadly)Well, here is a big investment I wish I did not have to have made. It went in this morning. It got blown out by a power surge. I think I might even have to put in some surge protection so it will not happen again. You make an investment like this and it makes you not want to leave for awhile longer. North Carolina in general and Raleigh in particular is a very, very nice place to live. Lorena will warm and cozy while she does her school work.

Our ten year plan is coming to a conclusion

Day 997 of 1000

Ten years ago, when we restarted our homeschool, we made a plan to get Kelly through college by 2014 followed by Christian in 2016.  We did it two year early because Christian finished two years early than our plan.  I only thought about it about once per year when I made the yearly plan for the next year’s homeschool and bought the books from Sonlight.  The plan was completely forgotten while we did the work of homeschooling. Now that we are at the end, it has dawned on me that we have not given much thought to what comes next.  Of course, I have my work, mortgage, and retirement to consider, but those are continuing things that require thought and readjustment on a regular basis when I change jobs, move, run into an unexpected expense, etc.  We have goals in all that, but they are just going to be part of life until I die, so I planning for that kind of thing is just part of the landscape.

Now though, Lorena and I have to figure out what we want to do next.  Does Lorena want to finish her degree or start a business or do both?  Do we want to live in Portland or Phoenix or Prescott or stay where we are? There are competing interests in all this.  The kids are both going off to graduate school on the west coast. We would like to be near them so we could see them on a very regular basis, but they are at the age to start making their own way without too much interference from us.  Are we thinking of moving just so we can be by them? Maybe.  But is that bad?  Maybe, maybe not. I thought life was going to get less complicated at this point, but it looks like I am wrong.

Returning to sanity after graduation

Day 995 of 1000

All the guests are gone back to Oregon.  Kelly is hard at work on her summer projects for her professor.  Christian has started preparation for his summer Partial Differential Equations graduate class.  Lorena is hard at work making sure the house is ready to show at a moments notice.  My flight to Arizona on Wednesday was delayed long enough that I had to fly out yesterday, promptly lost my luggage and am scheduled to work through the weekend.  In the midst of all this we are all trying to find new places to live out West and are finding out it is not that easy. Nothing really seems too settled right now.  We can all hardly wait to get back to more controlled lives.

Our house for sale on Realtor.com

Day 967 of 1000

Here is the link to the house on Realtor.com.  It all seems official now.  Christian came up, looked at the pictures and got a little sad.  We have to wait to see if it sells before we can really think about leaving, but I am headed out to Arizona to work again today and Lorena will follow me on a house hunting next week.  With graduations, house selling, house buying, 3000 mile moves, and graduate school at new Universities, life is pretty much in upheaval right now.  We hope the dust will settle by July or so.  Our real estate agent says this house is priced right and looking at comparable houses, we might even be a little bit low.  The point, though, is to get the house sold with the minimal hassle possible and we think we have a great agent.  His wife came over to put up the sign and the lock box.  She is a very, very sweet Southern Christian lady.  Before she left, she took Lorena’s hands and prayed with her.  That was very emblematic of our stay here in North Carolina as well as a very kind gesture.

Our house goes on the market on tax day

Day 966 of 1000

Our house in North Carolina goes on the market today.  We have enjoyed this one more than any other place we have lived.  It was perfect for homeschool because we had a large kitchen opening into a large open area with a fireplace.  It was perfect for Community College because it was literally five minutes away from Wake Techincal Community College.  It was perfect for University because it was twenty minutes away from North Carolina State University on the way to CostCo and Trader Joes so Lorena could kill two birds with one stone.  Lorena (of course) got her Thermador professional restaurant stove and hood and Bosch dishwasher in a granite counter top kitchen with two ovens and a great view of the forest behind the house when she was at the kitchen sink.

We loved everything about the house from the downstairs master bedroom suite, to walk-in closets in every bedroom, to the bonus room where we worked and studied every evening, to the screen porch with a gorgeous view of the acres and acres of woods behind us.  We are going to miss it a lot, but it is time to go and we hope to sell it quickly.

House scouting in Phoenix

Day 943 of 1000

I was disabused of a lot of misconceptions about life in Phoenix this weekend.  An old friend from Oregon took me around to see houses.  We talked about ways to stay cool on the hot days, grow stuff (citrus!), buy a house where water is not a problem, and a bunch of other stuff.  Our ideas about what we want in a house have changed pretty dramatically.  It seems like it is pretty hard to live anywhere near Phoenix on anything over an acre of land without a great view of some mountains.  Here are a couple of pictures of stuff we really liked–palm trees, swimming pools, orange trees, and fabulous mountain views.

Packing away the homeschool books

Day 939 of 1000

Lorena has started to pack things into boxes to get ready to sell the house and move.  We do not yet know were we are going, but we figure it is better to start early because we have a ton of books.

We love North Carolina

Day 914 of 1000

There is very little downside to living in North Carolina.  We love living here.  Now, though, we have some hard decisions to make.  My current job is in Arizona.  Both the kids plan to go to California, Arizona, and/or Washington.  They are both in programs that will keep them out west for at least four or five years.  Still, we love our house, we love the weather, and we love the culture.  It is hard to know what to do.
