Sick at home

I have not taken a sick day from work for many, many years so today is a first. The crazy thing is that I am not sure whether I have a cold or it is just allergies. I hope to find out at the doctor this afternoon. In the mean time Lorena is trying out every Mexican “cure” that enters her mind, some of which have nothing to do with the symptoms. I have to admit, some of them are pretty tasty, but most of the require suspension of disbelief.

Update: I have to admit these cures might have made me somewhat more flatulent.

Colonoscopy – a surprisingly benign event

Kiwi taking a nap with me after my colonoscopyI am at that awkward age when medical professionals begin to be persistent in their admonishments for a fairly wide variety of uncomfortable poking and prodding. Day before yesterday I took some pills and drank a very large amount of liquids and powders to clean things out so I would be ready for a colonoscopy yesterday. It was scheduled for the morning and I thought I was going to be able to go back to work in the afternoon. A colleague at work disabused me of the notion of returning to work, so I to the whole day off. I was glad I did.

The event itself was surprisingly benign. It turned out the most uncomfortable part of the whole thing took place the night before when I was drinking all those liquids and dealing with the results of my intake. When I got to the hospital, they asked me to lay down on a table, gave me something to put me to sleep and I woke up twenty minutes later like nothing had happened. The after effects of the sedative induced a nice long afternoon nap and that was that. I was glad to have Kiwi to join me in my nap.

Upshot: There is no reason to put off that colonoscopy you are dreading.

Back in the saddle and looking forward to an amazing 2016

I go back to work this morning after my first real week of vacation in several years. I thought I would have more time to reflect, but was amazingly busy even though we were cooped up with four people in our small apartment. Kelly heads home to Washington later this afternoon and Christian heads to Arizona early tomorrow morning. My brother and I have a weight loss plan. We are going to work together and hammer on each other to stay on track. I am going to do a spreadsheet like I have done in the past. Stay tuned…

World War III and Lorena’s trip to OHSU

Lorena's OHSU visitLorena had surgery about a year ago at the Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina. Everything went very nicely and now she is back into a dentist/doctor team here in Oregon to finish up. There is nothing that is any fun about this kind of thing. It is uncomfortable (fortunately there has not been a lot of pain), expensive and a hassle. Oregon Health Sciences University has a wonderful hospital but its location and the way it is laid out makes it horrible difficult to navigate. I know their are topological/geographical and historic reasons for all that, but that does not diminish the hassle when you do not feel good and are trying to get to an appointment, not to mention getting back to your car.

We have had lots and lots of things we needed to just get done before we can settle back into a routine. This is just another one of those things. Lorena has one more visit after this, probably right after the first of the year. Sometime in this whole mix, we want to buy a house. Maybe then, we will get back to a non chaotic routine. But, then again, maybe not. When I get to thinking things are too chaotic I think of what it must have been like living in Europe in the late 1930’s and early 1940’s. Our lives really have minor challenges. It could be much worse.

The Fitbit, weekends and temptation — Is busyness the answer?

Fitbit ChargeI have written here that I am a big fan of the Fitbit exercise/calorie management watch Christian and Kelly bought for me last year. I eat healthier, get more exercise and my weight continues to come down. I have been on it, since I started back, about six weeks now. My problem is that I fall off the wagon on weekends. I actually do quite well on the exercise thing, but when I am left to myself, I go get a snack in the kitchen and Lorena is queen of snacks in the kitchen. I think her fast metabolism and cooking ability are a big problem for me. She can just eat more than I and not gain weight. I am envious of that, but am what I am so need to figure out how to avoid temptation on the weekends.

So, I think maybe what I need to do is stay busier on weekends. That can be a difficult thing because after a week at the office, there is temptation just to lounge about, read books (with my bad habit of eating while I read, that is not a good thing diet-wise) and go out to eat with Lorena. So that was part of the reason I bought the BeagleBone Black yesterday. To get onto a project with a buddy so I am held accountable to finish stuff is something that might help occupy me so I do not eat so much. I have a couple of other technology projects on which I work for previous employers as an advisor, but that does not keep me away from the carbo-loading. Lorena has her garden and her school. I got nothin’! So maybe this will work. We will see.

How I use my Fitbit Charge

Fitbit progress July 2, 2015The kids bought me a Fitbit Charge watch last December. I had gotten pretty fat (in saying “pretty fat” I am being somewhat gracious toward myself) and had been prescribed a couple of medications for high blood pressure and cholesterol, measurements for both which were borderline. The doctor told me that I could probably get off of at least one of the medications if I just got some exercise and lost some weight.

If you do not know about the Fitbit watches, they are essentially pedometers, some of which have things like altimeters to determine when you climb stairs and heart-rate monitors. They also tell time. The watches connect to the internet through a bluetooth connection to upload the from the watch to a cell phoe or computer that updates a personal website. This is so a person can keep track of how far they have walked or run, how many calories they have burned, etc. My watch, the Charge does not have a heart-rate monitor, but I am thinking about getting on that does as a reward when I lose another 16 pounds.

When the kids gave me the Fitbit Charge, I immediately started using it. I am one of those kinds of guys who likes to measure every little thing. The watch and website provided me a mechanism that made it much faster, easier and more thorough than anything I had done previously (except when I played judo in college and was insanely meticulous). The cell phone app that goes with the Fitbit uses the GPS to track how fast and far I go when I go for my walks–other people use the same app for bicycling and running.

I did pretty well for a couple of weeks, but then everything got sidetracked when I got a new job in Oregon and we had to move across the country from North Carolina. I just quit using the thing. A little over three weeks ago, Kelly came down for a visit to Oregon from Seattle and let me know she was pretty disappointed that I did not use the watch for a couple of reasons–she and Christian made the effort to get it for me and I was really fat. She is gracious that way. So I decided to start using it again.

This time, I have been at it a little less than a month and it appears to be sticking. When I first started, I intended to walk a little at lunch time and then just manage what I ate to not go over a certain level of caloric intake. The software allows the user to chose how fast they want to lose. I have mine set up to help me target a 750 calorie daily deficit. How this works is that I enter all the food I eat and any special workouts I do into the website. That is amazingly easy because about every food you can imagine is already in the system and 99% of the time all I have to do is pick the food and say how much I ate (ounces, pieces, etc.). They have tons of major restaurant menu items in there, too, so if I go to Wendy’s for a salad, it is just a couple button pushes and that food is recorded.

The first week, I lost some weight, but was hungry all the time. It dawned on me that if I walked a little more, I got to eat a little more, so I started walking more. It started out on the treadmill at our gym, but then I decided it might be a good idea to walk to work. That added quite a lot of calories that I could eat. Then, on Saturday, Lorena and I started walking into town in the morning for breakfast, then again in the afternoon for lunch. It took a little while to calibrate the system because it gave me more credit for burning calories than I deserved–I think because I walked under trees a bunch of the time and the GPS struggled to figure out where I was. Now that I have that worked out a little better, I think the watch is providing a pretty accurate accounting of how many calories are going in versus how many are going out.

As I started losing weight, I started walking a little more. Lorena drives me to work in the morning (we only have one car), but then I walk downtown from work most days to meet her for lunch and walk back to work after lunch. The round trip is three miles. Then, after work, I walk the two miles from work to our apartment. So, now, my baseline walk everyday is five miles. I do additional walking around the building and up and down stairs at work. The Fitbit tracks that, too. The graph below shows the amount of walking I have recorded since I started back using the Fitbit a little less than a month ago. I think the 150 miles is a little bit more than I actually walked, but now that I know better how to use the system I think it will be more accurate for the month of July. I expect I am walking between 30-40 miles per week.

The whole system works for me. I am down over 19 pounds from the end of last year when I started using the Fitbit with four months missing in the middle. I am down a little over 9 pounds since I started back using it again a little over three weeks ago. I actually fell off the wagon two of the weekends since my new start or I would be down even more. The thing that helps me most is that I have a way to “pay” for eating more food. A couple of times, I have actually headed down to the gym to workout for an hour so I could afford enough calories to take Lorena out to dinner.

I have a long way to go. I hope to get down to my goal weight toward the end of the year, but I am already feeling a lot better.

Our car got towed this morning — The experience was not all bad, just most of it

Train to BeavertonOur car got towed this morning because we did not have a sticker from our apartment complex to park there. Unfortunately, we had never gotten one even though we had asked repeatedly. Fortunately, if you do not count all the notarizations, hassle, faxing emailing, use of public transport and associated costs, we were not charged for the towing and storage because the apartment complex acknowledged they were the ones who caused the problem. Of course, they will not do anything about the crazy hassle they caused us, but as I tell my kids, “don’t whine!”

There was some educational benefit to this exercise. We learned that it is pretty easy to take the wildly expensive (to the tax payer–not so much for the ridership) train to Beaverton from Wilsonville. If we ever really needed to go to Beaverton, that would be a good thing. From the image Lorena took inside the train, it does not look like the train is going to make up that huge tax deficit with fares anytime soon. If the freeway system around Portland wasn’t broken so badly, they might have not ridership at all.

The one GOOD thing that came out of this was that I learned it is quite enjoyable and even convenient to walk to work. It is even a semi-safe walk. I am going to try to start making the walk to and from work as frequently as possible. That is one great way to lose weight, not only with the exercise, but with the more limited amount of time available for eating because it took you so long to walk.

End of life stuff

My mother had emergency surgery last night. She is still in the hospital, but she is doing just fine. The doctor asked my sister about what Mom wanted to be done in terms of resuscitation if something did not go so well. We went through this a few months back with Lorena’s father and it changed my perspective. The fact that natural death is a process was something that became very clear as we went through that. It seems like interrupting that process can be the source of a lot of pain and suffering as well as a precipitous reduction in the quality of life for both the person going through at the loved ones looking on.

Interventions, Selfies and Fitbits

Dad gets a Fitbit for Christmas and takes a selfieI thought I was just getting a gift, but it turned out to be a full-blown intervention. That thing on my wrist in the picture to the right is something called a Fitbit Charge. I was told it was not the one with the heart rate monitor in it, because that one does not come out for another month or so. I was told I am entirely too fat. I would have argued with them, but they were right. I have never been this big before in my life. They said they got this for me to help me assure I do not eat too much.

So I plugged the thing in to charge last night and set it up when I got up this morning. The Fitbit is that watch on my wrist–pretty fashionable. One thing I did figure out was that doing a selfie can be pretty complicated if you want to show off your new watch at the same time. It is a fun little device. I need to figure out how I am going to report my journey on the blog after I figure out whether I can stick with it.

I am an Industrial Engineer. Industrial engineers are numbers guys. My whole work life is centered around numbers and measuring things. I do not know how I am going to do with this Fitbit, but I will no longer have the excuse that I do not know where I am calorie-wise at any given time. It keeps track of how many steps you take and whether or not you are going up or down stairs. I am amazed at its accuracy. The reality is that it does not have to be perfect. All it really needs is to be close. You have to enter the food you eat so they can account for those calories, but they make that easy for you, too.

I have only had the thing on for a few hours, but every time I go up the stairs it adds another floor to how many flights of stairs I have walked. Whenever I walk, it adds up steps. Based on my weight, goals and how aggressive I want to be, it builds a dial on both my computer and on my phone that shows me how the amount of calories of have consumed stack up against how many calories I have expended for the day. The idea is to end up with the dial indicator in the green at the end of the day. If you do that day in and day out, you will hit your goal in the specified amount of time. I like it and gong to try to make it work.

So far today, I have had an Egg McMuffin, a meduim diet coke and four and a half cups of coffee. I have not done any exercise other than going down to the kitchen from the bonus room to feed the cats and get more coffee. Here is the dial for my current status:

Near death experiences

I am not sure what I think about near death experiences (NDE), but they surely are interesting. An article with the sensational title Have scientists proved there is life after death? Research into ‘near-death’ experiences reveals awareness may continue even after the brain has shut down reminded me of some talks given on NDE’s by Gary Habermas to which Kelly and I listened a couple years back. Although he does not perform scholarly work in that area, as a hobby, Dr. Habermas has been collecting NDE data and stories for many years. The thing I like about Habermas is that he avoids “just-so-stories,” and sticks to stuff that has been documented vetted in a more rigorous fashion. He has a Ph.D. in History and Philosophy of Religion (Michigan State University, 1976), is a Research Professor at Liberty University, and has many, many refereed journal articles, books, etc. under his belt, so he knows phony stories when he sees them.

I thought it might be good to put up a few links to those stories. Do not ask me what I think about them because, like I said, I am not sure what to think. One thing I do know is that it is surely very interesting. All of the following links comes from Gary Habermas’s website.

Lorena surgery update

We spent the last two days up in Durham in a variety of hospitals. Lorena and Conchita stayed there the night after the surgery so they could assure everything is OK. The upshot is that everything is good, but Lorena will have to put up with having her teeth wired shut for two weeks. That cause quite a restriction on her diet. After that, she will have to stay on a liquid diet for another month. Then there are a few more restrictions and some dental stuff, but for the most part she is good to go. It is a relief to have all of this out of the way. This should be the last of these health posts for awhile. I have lots of good stuff about which I would like to write, so I am looking forward to getting back to that.

Lorena’s second surgery

Lorena and Conchita before the jaw surgery at Duke University Hospital(11:30 AM) Lorena, Grandma Conchita and arrived at the Duke Medical Pavilion for Lorena’s second surgery. The surgery is at 2:30 this afternoon, but we got here early so we could fill out the paperwork and Lorena can be prepped.  Lorena will be here overnight tonight and I plan to give a few updates here for the family as we go along. The surgery is fairly routine, but also fairly invasive so she will be here over night. Conchita and I do not know yet whether or not we will stay here for the night or go home and then come back in the morning.

(2:30 PM) We are still waiting. Lorena was supposed to have started surgery prep two hours ago, but we have not heard from anyone yet. We have a beeper that is supposed to go off when they are ready for us. I guess there were complications in the surgery before this one. Lorena just went to check on how much longer would be the delay and they took her in to get her prepped. Conchita and I are now the ones who are waiting.

(5:41 PM) We just got a call and were told the surgery had started. It should take about an hour. The doctor helped us decide some things that will make the surgery take about half the time we thought.

(7:20 PM) Lorena is out of surgery. Everything is OK. It was a pretty invasive thing. She will spend the night at the hospital.

Lorena and I visit the Duke Ambulatory Surgery Center

(10:00 am) I flew back to Raleigh yesterday so I could be with Lorena to get three very impacted wisdom teeth removed. They will put her under to do the surgery. We were told it is a fairly routine procedure that will take about an hour. This is the first time we have had an event like this so there is a little bit of apprehension, but it is nothing like some of our dear friends who are currently going through more onerous procedures. We will keep you posted.

(11:00 amI just left Lorena with the anesthesiologist after speaking to the surgeon. He decided we should do this as a two step process so there will be at least one more surgery after this one. Because there is an issue with one of the teeth, the doctor will just take that one to maintain focus on the problem area and reserve the other two teeth and perform some repair on a second pass depending on what he finds. I am now outside in the waiting room. They will page me when it is over and are ready for me to go back in.

(11:30 am) My beeper just went off and I was the surgery had started, the first incision had been made and everything was going just fine.

(12:30 pm) Lorena is out of surgery. We will not know what happens until the material around the removed tooth can be evaluated. Lorena will need to have a bone graft (from the hip) to replace some of the material eaten away by the cyst. So, as soon as the information comes back, the surgeon will know how invasive the work needs to be, then we will schedule a second surgery and that should be it. She will need to go on a liquid diet (zero chewing) until the next surgery is complete. They will call me to be with Lorena in just a bit when she recovers from the anesthesia.

(2:20 pm) We are out and headed home. More in a bit.

(5:30 pm) At home after picking up prescriptions for pain and infection. We also stopped by Harris-Teeter to pick up a ton of excellent non-chew foods. We are now in waiting mode to find out when Grandma Conchita can get here and what the lab report says so we can learn about the next steps.

Cinnamon rolls on a snow dayI have a great appreciation for cinnamon rolls, but Lorena likes to make them whenever we have a snow day.  When it snows in most of the places we have lived, there is not infrastructure in place to remove the snow quickly (not enough snow plows) so we end up stuck in the house for two or three days.  It is a perfect storm (no pun intended) of really fatting foods combined with no access to exercise equipment nor any good way to even go for a walk outside.  This is a very bad combination.  I think I am going to have to buy new pants.

Barefoot running

Born to RunI did not know it until I started reading a little, but the relative benefits of barefoot running can be quite a controversial subject.  There are many things barefoot running claims to help.  The one that caught my eye was the claim that it helps against shin splints. If that is true, I surely want to try it. Our friend, Daniel was talking to us about how it helped him get back into running after a twenty years hiatus because of knee trouble.  I am kind of a fan of the Tarhumara Indians of Brarrancas del Cobre in North Mexico.  They are they barefoot runners who, as part of their culture, run hundreds of miles at a crazy pace.

I think I will get the book pictured in this post, read about how to do this and try it out.  Daniel says the most important thing is to start very, very slowly–minutes per day–and build up to where you want to be.  That is good advise.  If it helps me with my shin splints and gets me running again, it will be worth it.

Lorena, Kelly, and Christian ran in what is probably their last Krispy Kreme run.  I use the term “run” very loosely in this case.  They might come back some time in the future, but it will likely not be this decade as they should all be out West soon.

Weight a minute

I have had so many false starts on my weight loss battle, that I almost hate to bring this up, but I am down 13 pounds.  I have 29 pounds to go.  Feel free to hold my feet to the fire.

Carl’s Jr./Hardee’s Low Carb

Carl's Jr./Hardee's Low CarbI used to eat the Carl’s Jr./Hardee’s Low Carb hamburgers (no bun included) because I was on an Atkin’s diet.  Now I eat them because I really like them a lot.  It causes some problems, though.  Kelly told us she learned in her Agribusiness marketing class that ALL Carl’s Jr./Hardee’s marketing is aimed exclusively at men.  I got a real-world view of that today when Lorena and I ran down to get me a Low Carb burger.  She refused to eat anything from Carl’s Jr./Hardee’s.  Instead, we drove through Wendy’s first to get some food more fitting for a female after which we got my Low Carb burger than sat and ate together in the car.
