Sometimes it seems like things are getting really bad

This article reminded me of I Kings 19:18. There is a lot of evil in this world. It has been that way since antiquity. Things are going to get a lot worse before they get better. Marcus Borg, Bart Ehrman, Tony Campolo and David Neff are wrong, intellectually dishonest, self serving and on the wrong side of history.

Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.

Elijah was discouraged. He thought he was the only one left. He was not. It is all good. God IS in control.

Forty minutes of Portland traffic to drive a mile and a half

Lorena picked me up from work at 4PM today. We drove straight home, but did not get there until 4:40. That is traffic as usual in Portland. It was planned to be that way. This was just one more reminder of how badly Portland is managed and why so many companies are continue to leave.

Christian’s new (old – Model No. 1391401) IBM Keyboard

The first thing odd thing Lorena noticed in her current visit to Tempe to see Christian was the very loud clacking that occurred when he typed on his keyboard. He types pretty fast so there was a continuous racket. It turns out he had bought one of the 10-ton (seemingly) boat anchor type old 1980’s IBM Model M keyboards for $30 on eBay. People who follow this kind of thing or lived in that era will know that about which I speak and why it is hilarious.

Lorena is going to visit Christian for a week, so I am a bachelor for a week unless Kelly comes for a visit. I have my fingers crossed.

Lorena starts planting her garden

Lorena's first planting session April 2015She bought a shovel, a few plants and a few other things. She is VERY excited to get started. She planted three tomato plants (1 cherry, 2 regular), radishes, some flowers, basil, rosemary, basil, beets, cucumbers and cilantro. She still has chiles, strawberries, lemon peppers and maybe a few other things. She is quite pleased with herself and much happier when she has a garden.

Moving from North Carolina

Lorena and Christian are flying to Raleigh, North Carolina today to move out of our house there. Although there is nostalgia and love for a great house, neighborhood, and the most amazing small city in all of America (I know that is a religious discussion, but we really believe that), it was time to move on. The hard part is that we are all still in temporary locations–as if that is not just a fact of life for everyone on this earth in so many senses. The kids are in graduate school while Lorena and I have moved close to Grandpa Milo and Grandma Sarah to be as much of a help as possible now that they are aging.

I got slammed with a cold or allergies or something that I do not want to take the chance of giving to them, so I am hanging out, mostly at our apartment in Wilsonville. Lorena left very early this morning so I drove down to the town where I spent my last two years of high school and had a Sausage McMuffin at MacDonald’s. I did not want to go in to give everyone else what I have so I ate it by myself. It cost me exactly $2.00–no tax. For some reason, maybe it was the cold, it did not feel particularly nostalgic. Maybe it was the cold. I would like to go see my buddies. Bryan, Warren, Curt and Tom, but I don’t want them to get this nastiness either. Curt gets a bunch of the guys together for breakfast one Saturday per month which has been awesome. I am glad he does it and that I am included.

Sun in Oregon, snow in Raleigh

Snow in Raleigh (by NCSU)We have had an amazing run of good weather in Oregon since we got here. Today started out as another bright and sunny one with temperatures supposed to get up into the low 60’s. Meanwhile, Raleigh is getting slammed with a boatload of snow. We love this picture that was taken not to far from the kids campus at North Carolina State University after only two inches of snow. Today, four inches are supposed to fall. We are still on the school-closings text list at Wake Technical Community College and everything is shut down today. There could be all out war and starvation. Keep Raleigh in your thoughts.

Christian, interior designer

Christian's living room in Tempe
Christian waited a long time to be able to afford to finish furnishing his apartment. The three new tables are the end table on the left side of the sofa, the coffee table where he is doing the typing and the monitor stand in front of him. He paid less than $50 for the lot of them at Ikea. What a deal. In addition, he was able to get the monitor, the desk lamp you can see to his left above the office chair, and a floor lamp that is out of view. I have to say he is quite a fashion designer. I would like to say I enjoyed it as much as he did, but he derived great satisfaction from the whole process and loved the result, so that probably is not true. Lorena will be proud.

Smart cat

Rubix brings Lorena the cat food lidWe have no illusions about our own intelligence, but we think our cats are pretty brilliant. Kiwi comes into our bedroom to harass us every morning around seven so we will get up and feed them. They upped their game this morning though. Rubix (Kelly’s cat) brought the lid to yesterday’s cat food can to Lorena to give her a hint that she was running late.

Update: Today the twin cat sisters get their new travel cage for the driving trip across the country. I will put a snapsot up when I get one.

Curt’s Christmas album

Somehow, I have not received one of these for many, many years, possibly decades. I am grateful to have received one from old college buddy, travel buddy, indoor nerf-hoops and life-long friend Curt N. A wave of nostalgia hit the instant I saw it. Dying to give it a listen. I am envious of those who own the whole set. Thanks Curt.

Goats and changes at work in Prescott

Goats at work in PrescottI wanted to get a good shot of the small herd of domestic goats that walked past our office door, but I was not fast enough. I got this picture as the exited out the back of the parking lot around the side of the building. You cannot see them so well, but I wanted to preserve the evidence for posterity. There is a ton of wildlife around here. I saw my first javelina in the wild on the side of the road beside a fire station in a subdivision a couple of blocks from my hotel. Very cool.

That is not the only thing going on. Our regular “Software Thursday” (sometimes it falls on Wednesday, Friday or whatever else works) meeting of John, Forrest, Mark and I was converted into a going away party for our boss, Mark. Mark has been a truly excellent boss. We are on a tough project and we yell at each other passionately on a semi-regular basis, but we got each others back. The rest of the team hates to see Mark leave. The new guy has been here a couple of weeks and seems to be very good, but he is still getting acclimated.

We talked about the importance of maintaining professional contact with your workmates after you leave a job. It has always accrued for good every time I ever did it and I still work with a core team of people from a job I took in Corvallis over thirty years ago. The old saying is true, “If I would have known I would still be working with them thirty years later, I would have treated them nicer.”  The more things change the more they stay the same.

Reading is better on a Note 4 than from a paper book.

Christian tests his new Samsung Galaxy Note 4 at McDonaldsChristian and I have been waiting a long, long time for a new phone. After the normal two year phone service subscription wait, we decided to wait an extra two months for the Samsung Galaxy Note 4’s to come out before we pulled the trigger. Lorena and Kelly opted for the Note 3’s and the reality is the difference between the two is evolutionary rather than revolutionary so they did not do too bad. Still, we are glad we waited.

About the only chance I get to read books these days is when I travel between North Carolina and Arizona on the airplane for work. I had gotten accustomed to reading books on my Samsung Galaxy S3 phone. It has a relatively small screen compared to the Nook and Kindle eReaders the kids used for their textbooks, but it really was not a bad experience and it was very, very handy to be able to get a new book virtually any time I wanted.

Now, with the increased screen size of the Note 4 (5.7″) over the S3 (4.8″) I am in hog heaven. Before I got the new phone I had already decided I liked reading from the phone better than reading from a book. I got a nice case for the phone with a kickstand, so I could set it upright on the seat tray in the airplane. I can change the font to whatever I want, never lose my place because the phone remembers it, etc., etc.

I have heard lots of grumbling from lots of people about how paper books are much better than electronic books because of the page turning and flipping thing and the feel of a real book. I sense a little snobbery there and I am not buying it. After going back and forth between the two formats, if I have a choice, I will pick electronic every time.

Lorena’s second surgery

Lorena and Conchita before the jaw surgery at Duke University Hospital(11:30 AM) Lorena, Grandma Conchita and arrived at the Duke Medical Pavilion for Lorena’s second surgery. The surgery is at 2:30 this afternoon, but we got here early so we could fill out the paperwork and Lorena can be prepped.  Lorena will be here overnight tonight and I plan to give a few updates here for the family as we go along. The surgery is fairly routine, but also fairly invasive so she will be here over night. Conchita and I do not know yet whether or not we will stay here for the night or go home and then come back in the morning.

(2:30 PM) We are still waiting. Lorena was supposed to have started surgery prep two hours ago, but we have not heard from anyone yet. We have a beeper that is supposed to go off when they are ready for us. I guess there were complications in the surgery before this one. Lorena just went to check on how much longer would be the delay and they took her in to get her prepped. Conchita and I are now the ones who are waiting.

(5:41 PM) We just got a call and were told the surgery had started. It should take about an hour. The doctor helped us decide some things that will make the surgery take about half the time we thought.

(7:20 PM) Lorena is out of surgery. Everything is OK. It was a pretty invasive thing. She will spend the night at the hospital.

Grandma Conchita gets on the plane in Monterrey

Grandma Conchita goes to North CarolinaTio Lauro checks Grandma Conchita in at the airport in Monterrey. She arrives tonight to stay with us in Raleigh until the end of the year. We are very thankful she can come.

Heading to work on my birthday

The down side is that all I got to do in terms of celebration was to have a breakfast croissant at the Sheetz by the airport in Raleigh. The upside as that we will do a better job when I get back home in a week and a half. It is really not so bad. I might be in Prescott and Lorena at home in North Carolina soon to be with her mom, but I will be able to do a preliminary birthday dinner with Christian in Tempe before we go to meeting tonight.

Should we move to Portland

Our last visit to Oregon gave us great pause about whether or not we should move back there. We have been gone for seven years now. We felt somewhat estranged from Oregon in general and Portland in particular. It has been difficult to put our finger on the reticence we feel about moving back, but it is definitely there. There are several smaller things that, on the surface might give us reason to prefer where we are now over Oregon. The reality is that, for us, they are minor considerations. The weather is a lot better in Raleigh–mild all year long (like Portland), but with many more days of sunshine.  The metropolitan area around Raleigh features three truly superior National Research Universities while Portland features a pretty good, not great, but pretty good Regional University.  All of the ones listed are better than any universities Oregon has to offer. There are lots of little things like that, but they are not the reasons that hold the most sway.

I am pretty sure both the culture in Oregon has shifted as have our cultural preferences. For all its hipness, Portland just seems more intolerant and coarse than other places where we have an opportunity live. I do not really believe the quality of writing or the truth of the content in the New York Times is very high, but they recently published an article about Portland titled Will Portland Always Be a Retirement Community for the Young?  It captures a view of a part of the Portland reality that rings true. The certainly did not capture the whole reality, the nuances of old Oregon culture being so divorced from contemporary Portland culture, it would be hard for anyone to understand. Still, it is quite a good article that I recommend to anyone considering a move to, not just Portland, but Oregon in general. The description of Portland in this article is probably quite attractive to many, but does a good job of explaining why we are not so interested in moving back.

We are still in the throes of making a decision. We know we have to move West both for family and work. We are just happy that Raleigh, North Carolina is such an awesome place to live while we work through it.

Now that I actually have something to write…

That often hear refrain that “getting old is not for the faint of heart” is coming home to roost. I have good stuff backed up and no time to write about it. Dental issues, health issues (nothing serious), travel, work, and kids (even though they are now both over 2000 miles away) have conspired to cause me to put up placeholder posts talking about about things that require now thought and little time. I never thought I would write about my health complaints, but now that I am a little older and it is about MY health issues, it seems like a much worthier topic than when someone else was complaining. So, what you get today, is pretty much nothing because I can write fast. Still, there is good stuff going on so I will look forward to the (very soon) time when I have time to write something thoughtful.
