Birthday 60 celebration

Lorena buys me a bell for my birthdaySixty is a great age. I plan to enjoy my sixties greatly. Being older is such a good deal, I might have been enticed to wish I was seventy if I were not enjoying sixty so much. Lorena and I are going to celebrate a little more tonight, but she got me a few little gifts yesterday (a wallet, a bell to ring when I want her to bring me something to drink–like that is going to work and a few more little things). Tomorrow, we look for houses. We think we know what we want, but we have been wrong before. Many times.

Mexican Independence Day mustache

Luis LeonardoIndependence Day is celebrated in Mexico on September 16. Well, really, the celebration starts on the 15th leading up to el Grito de Dolores on the stroke of midnight, but that is another story. In my humble opinion, the very best part of the celebration is the ubiquitous and unparalleled Mexican mustache. The dapper fellow in the picture with the mustache is my nephew, Luis Leonardo at a school event in Queretero on September 15. He wears the mustache well–quite dashing actually. The costumes and sombreros everyone wears are beyond cool. All the family in Monterrey got together for a carne asada. I am stuck up here in Oregon while Lorena is eating carne asada and all the ripe mangoes she wants. That is somehow just wrong.

Visiting Grandpa Milo with my siblings on his 86th birthday

Going to church with Grandpa Milo on his 86th birthdayLorena and I pick Grandpa Milo and Grandma Sarah up on Sundays to take them to church. It was nice to see Uncle Doug and Aunt Jean there at the assisted living home when we arrived yesterday. Aunt Julia had come a couple of days earlier because she went out of town this weekend. All of us kids, of course, brought food, the last thing any of us needed–including Grandpa Milo.

It is not an easy thing to navigate the issues associated with Alzheimer’s disease, but I am very grateful for siblings how are all fully engaged. Aunt Julia really carries the brunt of it. She is the one who gets called for the day-to-day issues, but she calls the rest of us whenever she needs help. Lorena and I visit two or three times per week for church. Doug does all the bookkeeping which takes a significant effort. Jean visits a lot and is Julia’s right arm.

The good news is they are in a good place and are happy. They are obviously eating quite well.

Once in a blue moon you can figure out what to do next

Moon out the window in the morning at DWFritzLorena and I saw this beautiful moon out the window of our car as she drove me to work this morning. It was even bigger and lower in the sky than when I took this picture out the window of my work at DWFritz. Lorena mentioned Oregon would have a blue moon tonight. I looked that up and found that a blue moon is when the moon is full for a second time in a single month.

I do not know why these kinds of things seem to coincide with times when we are thinking deep thoughts. I am actually pretty sure it is the other way around, that I only notice stuff like this when I am in a time of contemplation. This time of reflection seems to be the trifecta of reflection on the meaning of life. Part of it is that all of us, Christian, Kelly, Lorena and I are within a few years, if the Lord gives us those years, of entry to new things and new places while the world seems to be in upheaval.

Of course, Kelly and Christian will graduate from college and go off to do whatever it they are given to do. Always, in the past, they had some next thing they wanted to accomplish that mostly had to do with school. Now, though, there will almost certainly no more school for them, at least as students. So many things are open to them, they have no idea what would be best to do. Since they are still a few years away from that, patience is the key, but that is hard when the next move will be to something they have never previously done.

The same is true for Lorena and I. We have, at most, a few more years to be close to my parents with their memory issues. Then it is on to something new–maybe even retirement for me. Maybe even in Mexico, but maybe not. It is hard not to think about it even though it is not at all knowable. Patience is the word of the day.

Objective truth

Eating appetizers at McMenamins WilsonvilleOur family discusses the subject of objective truth frequently. We have done so as a family for pretty close to a decade. As soon as the kids were old enough to understand the concept, we started to talk about it. The direction our culture is going is not friendly to those who want to live their lives in conformances to mandates placed on them by the objective reality of a Christian God. When the culture embraces the immorality of things like abortion, cohabitation outside of marriage and even the pursuit of fun in the form of sport, music, art and leisure at the expense of the pursuit of God and things God hates, lives get wasted and people suffer.

The hard part of this is that kids get beat up and ostracized culturally and socially as a result of their adherence to objective truth and the dictates it puts on their lives. Sometimes it is an active thing, but most of the time these kids get shuffled off to the side, ignored, derided and ridiculed. Some of us older people notice this. As children of the sixties, seventies and eighties, we went through it ourselves. The difference is that when we went through it, there were large swaths of culture who were on our side. I do not think that is true anymore. Culture is active in its derision of the good and of objective truth.

This is especially so in cities like Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, Boston and New York, but I think it has even seeped down into strongholds of morality in places like North Carolina, Texas and Arizona. Kids with access to the Internet tend to give credence to what they read on Reddit and other venues that tend toward the sophomoric, but with a hard edge of aggressive hedonism. The sad part of it all is that what they read on Reddit is often reinforced by what they are taught in school by people trained at educational institutions saturated in the very same vacuous philosophical pablum that upholds relative morality.

It is a hard thing to swim against the tide. I wish I knew better how to encourage those who do so.

Another rite of passage

The Ford Fiesta now belongs to KellyKelly bought her own car insurance yesterday and will register the Ford Fiesta in her own name later this week. Christian is doing the same this week with the Honda Accord. Lorena and I are now a one car family. The only remaining thing like this that connects to the kids is our family cell phone plan. Some might think it would be best for me to turn that over to the kids themselves, but they would be wrong. I told them that as a condition for their cell phone plan, they have to provide Lorena with tech support for her phone and tutoring for her community college. In my book that is an absolute steal. It would be a steal at twice the price!

Kelly rides the train back to Seattle

Kelly goes back to Seattle on the trainKelly’s whirlwind visit ended yesterday afternoon when Lorena took her up to Vancouver to catch the train back to Seattle. This week has turned into a big week for both Kelly and Christian. I already spoke about Christian’s trip back east to present his research results for the year. Kelly is in the middle of a smaller, but still big chunk of research she needs to show to her boss when he arrives back to Seattle from a month or so away in Europe of some such thing. The upshot is there has been a lot of pressure and angst that should see some relief this week.

What better way to relieve angst and get some office work done than go on a train ride with great Wifi and coffee products. Kelly has now taken the round trip train ride between Seattle and Vancouver, Washington (the Vancouver around these parts). Christian has taken it once. Both of them love it. Last night, the train took an extra couple of hours for some reason. My understanding was that had something to do with the heat, but that does not make sense to me. The good part was that it gave Kelly an extra couple of hours of quality time with her research so she was able to get it mostly ready to show to her boss tomorrow morning.

I love train travel. Part of it is the feeling of travel without care of time restrictions. I have only taken a train ride one time to a business meeting. That was between Raleigh and Charlotte in North Carolina and I enjoyed it a lot, but it arrived a couple of hours late. On the few other times I have taken a train it was for vacation and I was able to plan for the possibility of lateness which happened all too frequently. I know some train systems are punctual, but I have not often been fortunate in that regard.

It all kind of fits into the Environmentalist Wacko theme that has crept into this blog, too. It feels like I am saving the planet when I ride the train. Don’t tell any Democrats, but I kind of like that.

This marriage thing

I have long been of the opinion that the government should not be engaged (no pun intended) in the marriage business. The problem with government meddling in affairs outside of their domain did not begin with the recent Supreme Court overstepping of its constitutional bounds here in the United States. It happened long before that. A guy named Matt Appling in an aptly titled blog post, If You Think the Supreme Court Just “Redefined” Marriage, Take It Up With King Henry the Eighth, really nails the issue. It is ironic that so many people interested in redefining marriage to include something that is not marriage (same sex unions) are calling out the Christian community on the divorce issue. This is something over which the Christian world has fought wars, divided and argued for centuries.

It is right to argue that Christian’s need to get their house in order when it comes to the issue of divorce, but it seem very disingenuous when it is argued by people who treat the institution of marriage (in the true sense of the word) in such a cavalier manner. Christians really need to get this issue right. People both inside the Christian community and out who dishonor marriage through unrepentant fornication, adultery and attempts to redefine it should be viewed with incredulity when they try to argue that Christians are hypocrites with respect to divorce. Some of us are, but some of us, even in our weakness and failure, continue to repent, live repentant lives and fight the good fight.

In the meantime government should get out of the marriage business.

A leisurely Fourth

Young corn from Lorena's garden 2015 WilsonvilleSquash, lettuce, onions and a pepper. Lorena's garden Wilsonville 2015

Lorena took a picture of the young corn (on the left) from her garden. We are home alone on this Fourth of July. Grandpa Milo and Grandma Sarah are celebrating their 62nd wedding anniversary today. We were glad that Aunt Julia and Cousin Amy were able to celebrate it with them. Lorena and I will celebrate the event with them tomorrow. Cousin Merle and Carolyn came to dinner last night and breakfast this morning along with our Favorite Government School TeacherTM Trisha so we got the chance to wax nostalgic for awhile. It was a great reminder to make time to be with those who value what is truly important. Kelly and Christian are at a big get-together at some lake an hour or so out of Seattle, so Lorena and I have stayed home to work on her school work and talk leisurely walk or two around the neighborhood. I had a big post on mourning the passing of democracy here in America, but have just been enjoying myself and do not have the energy for it until another time.

Missing Grandpa Lauro for a year now

Grandpa Lauro and MattiasOne year ago yesterday, Grandpa Lauro died. He was 71 years old. The photo to the left is of Grandpa Lauro and his youngest grandson, Matias. I was trying to think of a way to describe him and it is hard. Of course he was a genuinely Christian man, but that word has been diluted greatly in our day and age so it just does not say enough. After considering it for awhile, about the best I can do is describe some of his accomplishments. There is not time nor room to describe all his accomplishments, but I will try to describe what appealed to me.

He was extremely erudite. His erudition probably was a result of voracious interest in, among other things, music, art, history and theology. He did not have a high level of education, but three of his sons graduated from world class engineering Universities. His fourth son is an entrepreneur and on the verge of earning a law degree. He participated in his community and was politically active, mostly at a local level. He earned a diploma in Music with a focus on Violin from the local University.

His greatest accomplishment, though, was the impact he had on those around him, particularly his family, but also the people with whom he worked, his neighbors and many life long friends. He gravitated to “the least of these.” He loved them and they loved him. His funeral was the most amazing funeral I have ever attended with hundreds and hundreds of people who came to show their respects. A special letter arrived from a man who had not seen him since he was a little boy but on whom he had a profound positive influence.  He had this same impact on others when he was young as he had on me as a middle age and older man. The attendence and reverence of the people at his funeral were a manifestation of that influence.

I respected him very, very much. The thing I respected most about him was his fierce love for his God and a fierce dedication to the greatest commandment of them all, to love others as Jesus loved them. We miss him and look forward to the day when we can be together again.

This empty-nester thing has its upside

Empty nestersWe miss our kids a lot now that they are off at college. Still, there is a big upside to this empty-nester thing. Today, Lorena and I got up late, walked to breakfast at a nice little restaurant about half a block from our apartment. Then, this afternoon, we walked three or four blocks down to Jimmy John’s. Both time we had a leisurely meal. We have not had that luxury for years and years. We had to inhale our food and run off to a library, bookstore or laboratory as fast as possible because there was always a deadline.

Corollary to that is our apartment. We went from a big place on a big lot to a studio apartment with just barely enough stuff to get by. This might not last forever, but we are enjoying the latter. A lot. There are no lawns to mow, few windows, plates, floor and counters to wash, no equipment to maintain. It is fabulous to sit and look out our window at the most beautiful trees in existence, Douglas Fir along with the rest of the greener than anyplace else greenery in Oregon.

We know we are going to have to do something else before too long, but Lorena are very much enjoying the quiet, the communion with old friends, family and each other for now. It has reduced our urgency to do anything that might tie us down too much to do the “smelling of the roses” we are currently enjoying.

Mother’s Day weekend: Lorena and Christian in Tempe

Lorena makes breakfast for Christian in TempeIt is early in the day and you can see in the picture that Lorena is already hitting the sauce. Christian turned in his last project for the semester yesterday so all he has on his schedule today is a haircut and a trip out to one of our church conventions in Casa Grande. They are having way too much fun.

This summer will be an all research all the time summer in the Tempe heat. I think Christian is really looking forward to it. His research is still in the mathematical theory stage, so there is not a lot of lab work yet. I am not sure there will be very much lab work with his current direction, but that direction will almost certainly change toward the specifics of his dissertation as soon as his paper is delivered in November.

Reflection on a changing scene

View from our apartment window (Wilsonville)
It is a beautiful spring day in Oregon. This is the view from the desk in my apartment. It is only a parking lot and it is amazing how much we enjoy the trees, hill and comings and goings we see from our window. Interesting things are happening all around with no certain end. Not only with Grandpa Milo and Grandma Sarah in their current state of mind and body, but with work, our family in Mexico and with our kids off at college. It is nice to have a quiet place to sit and consider it all quietly. I think my reflective mood was influenced by the fact that my daily bible reading today was Romans 12.

War

I am one of those people who has not had to deal with much suffering in this life. Last night we, Lorena, Grandma Sarah, Grandpa Milo and I, were at the home of some old dear friends, Gary and Dru. Grandpa Milo and his generation fought in the Korean War. Gary, just a few years older than I, fought in the Vietnam War. They were both drafted into the army and had no choice about whether or not they would go to war. My generation, on the other hand, never went to war and, arguably, has done more to foul up our country and turn our culture into an entitlement culture than any previous generation.

We talked about this last night. Gary has been reading in the book of Judges in the bible and pointed out something I had never before noticed. Enemies were left in the land to teach war to the children of Israel who had never faced it.

Judges 2:21-Judges 3:2 And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel; and he said, Because that this people hath transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice; I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations which Joshua left when he died: That through them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of the LORD to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not. Therefore the LORD left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua. Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan; Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;

We lived just North of Ft. Bragg when we lived in North Carolina and daily rubbed shoulders with many people who had seen war. There is a world of difference between the culture there and the culture in where we find ourselves now in Portland. The only observation I have about this is that for people who have not known or been touched by war, there are many “unknown unknowns” and an unrealistic sense of entitlement that seem to add coarseness to our culture. I count myself among those who have never seen war and want to be wary of thinking I deserve something I do not.

Driving Grandpa Milo and Grandma Sarah to church

Grandpa Milo and Grandma Sarah, my father and mother, currently live in a memory care unit in the Portland area. We live just a little south of Portland and have been meeting with a different church than them. They have declined to the point where they now need us to come and get them to go to our meetings on Sundays and Wednesdays. We got permission from our ministers and will look forward to having more time with them. It is the reason we are in Oregon so we are thankful for the opportunity.

Grandpa Milo’s pond plans

Grandpa Milo did lots of interesting things in his life. One of them was that he built a half-acre concrete pond on his little farm outside of Newberg, Oregon. It was a filtered pond with a three foot waterfall and a 12 foot waterfall, a Japanese garden, volleyball beach, a cabaña for parties and much, much more. He put in several thousand petunia’s every year along with a lot of other flowers so it was absolutely beautiful. Aunt Julia found the original plan he made on some computer paper and I thought I would put it up here for posterity.

Grandpa Milo's pond plan

Grandpa sold it to some folks who turned it into a wedding location when he retired. Here is the view from Google maps:

Elephant ears at the tulip farm

Eating elephant ears at the tulip farm - Kelly's 21st birthday
Her twenty-first birthday. Another rite of passage. What better way to spend it than with Mom eating elephant ears at the tulip farm. It doesn’t get much more Oregonian than that. I have had my complaints about the whole “do hard things” meme that is prevalent amongst the youth in certain parts of our society. My beef will all that is that it is mostly just lip service. All of us fail at this. I am not talking about people how fall of the wagon every now in then in their efforts at self improvement. What I am talking about is people who talk about doing hard things and then go get a liberal arts degree with no rigor nor future path to gainful employment. We are proud of Kelly in that regard. She is a lot like me in that staying focused on something that is not always fun, but is always hard work is difficult for us. She is doing that. This is her spring break and she has been working the whole time. There is just too much to do, it has been constantly like that for a long time now and she has four or five years left to go. We feel so fortunate she is daughter and it is an amazing thing that she is now “of age.”

Kelly turns 21

Kelly's last day as a twenty year old
Kelly spends most of her time studying these days. Today is her last day as a twenty year old. It is spring break at University of Washington, but the reality is that PhD students do not get spring breaks. We are very thankful she was able to take time to spend a couple of days with us her in Oregon to celebrate her 21st birthday. It seems like just yesterday that she started homeschool.
