Christian finally pulls the PhD trigger

Day 958 of 1000

Lorena wrote just about all that needs to be said on her facebook wall yesterday:

Congratulations to Christian! It was a hard choice, but he accepted the selective Dean’s Fellowship from the Fulton School of Engineering for a PhD in Electrical Engineering at Arizona State University. The award includes a full scholarship for his degree coupled with a first year research grant. Christian will will receive sponsorship by MIT Lincoln Labs for his research and will work there during the summers while he is getting his degree. Ken and I think it was easily the best choice.

    Hi Ken and Lorena,
I am going to brag ON you and FOR you because the situation of having both of your children getting accepted into fully funded (and then some) PHD programs at top notch schools in their chosen fields of study is certainly a testament to the two of you. I AM NOT negating all of the hard work that Kelly and Christian obviously put in, nor the dedication they have, but they may not have gotten to where they are now if it hadn’t been for the two of you setting the stage and having dreams for your kids and walking beside them the entire way. Reading Ken’s blog for as many years as I have, and being a home school mother myself, I think I have a particular insider’s viewpoint on this. Yours has been a road of continual co-navigation and guidance and vision and of PRAYER for your family and the kids’ future. I want to say BRAVO! to the two of you, and to wholeheartedly congratulate both Kelly and Christian on their accomplishments.

Ruthie, you are so kind to say these things. You know you have followed the same path with the same results. We are so thankful for the support of all those others like you who are doing the best they know how to give their kids something good with a longer term perspective than even this life. It is really hard right now to think of seeing them go away. We are trying to figure out what to do next.

WOW! Way to go, Christian! You are an inspiration! I also agree with Ruthie’s comments – great family!

Thanks Gene. Now we just have to figure out what is next.
