That is truly amazing. Maybe that is why we had so much trouble with those story problems.
The prof is right… only if the board is a perfect square, the first cut is exactly down the middle, and the second cut is ACROSS one of the pieces from the first cut :-). I can’t see the full illustration to the right of the problem, to know for sure if that stick is actually what’s to be taken as the default saw and victim. However, if the board measurements are two unequal numbers, then the variables begin. Hard to say how many permutations would be possible! Might depend also on how fine the saw is, how firm the lumber, how (un)skilled Marie might be… This would be a lawyer’s hay day in court!!! I’d say the (in)prof should be docked for lack of clarity in the question. Lol

I think you are right Jon! I knew there had to be a loophole, I was just not smart enough to figure it out.
