People in My Classes

People in My Classes

Yes I pay attention in class. I do, I do! But there’s only so much that can be said about the particulars of what I’ve been learning.

Biology is informative.
Calculus is difficult (in a good way).
Volleyball is super fun.
American Literature is fine.

Sums it up well.
But the really INTERESTING stuff is within the actual class. The people. I have already made nicknames for the outstanding personalities.

Biology:

Outback-hippie-man:
always comes into Biology with guaraches, shorts and wrinkled half-open linen shirts. The beard, facial scars, flippy mullet and Philosophy major complete the look. Has the air of East Portland.

Crunchy-hair-girl:
Her hair is so crunchy! It is bothersome. I want to scrunch it. Also she is Student Body President and wears tye-dye a lot.

Black-haired hippie:
Differs from the other hippie in hair color and clothing style. Creepy beard. Working on a thesis.

Perky Blonde Lady
I like her :) She is always sweet and perky and also very helpful. Used to be a music teacher.

Calculus:
In Calculus we have a math dream-team so ethnically diverse it would make Barney the dinosaur proud. There’s Sammha, who moved here from South Arabia a month ago. Nestor, the Venezuelan high school kid who hasn’t been here that long either. And yours truly, the Mexican-American culturally aware wunderkind. We all sit together at lunch and properly bask in our cultural and ethnical diversity.

Volleyball is awesome. Lots of cool people. First of all there’s:
Anna: Super nice new friend. Likes Mexico. We’re tight.

Muscle-shirt-dude: Always wears muscle-shirts. Takes any disparaging comment about football personally. Likes football.

Bearded man: Decent fellow with a beard. What is it with all these beards?

Kevin: His name is actually Robert but he looks like a Kevin to me, so on the inside I just call him Kevin.

Mini Aunt Julia: I don’t personally know her, but she looks and dresses just like my Aunt Julia. Probably a very cool person.

Then there are the odd characters around campus who we run into such as:
Green haired girl:
Girl with green hair.
Red haired boy:
Boy with hair colored an unnatural shade of crimson that is dark and bright at the same time.
Insane Mohawk Guy:
Has an INSANE mohawk that’s divided into 5 2-foot long sections. Each section gradually lightens in color until it is a stiff point of blonde, scraping the sky and proclaiming it’s rakish ‘devil-may-care’ philosophy to the world.
Ryanthelifeguard: A Lifeguard that we know from the pool. He acknowledges our presence. We acknowledge his. Swell guy.

Boy I discriminate people by hair color a lot don’t I? I hope that’s not racist.

Oh and American Literature is devoid of any interesting personalities. We all sit there for an hour and learn about hypocritical Puritans and such.

I AM HAVING SO MUCH FUN!!!! And I am studying hard I promise!!! :)

Pink Binder

Pink Binder

Unlike Oregon, North Carolina is not a sales-tax-free state, so when tax-free weekend comes up, things get wild.
Party atmosphere I tell you.
We moseyed over to the local Staples to get some west coast reminiscent tax-free school supply shopping in last tax-free weekend. We had quite a time. I got two pink notebooks, one green one (because there weren’t any other shades of pink), pens, pencils, folders, highlighters AND a binder.
The binder is a special shade of light pink. Sort of like the Pink Panther’s muzzle, or Breast-Cancer-Awareness pink. Not quite tickle-me-pink, not quite cherry blossom. It is lovely to behold. Does wonders for one’s mood. The only problem is, I don’t really have much to fill it with.
I like things to be properly done. That means when I have a backpack, it should be filled with school supplies. When I have a pencil bag, it should be filled with pencils. When I have a calculator case, a calculator should be in it. When I have a pink binder, it should be filled with important papers!
So I have made it my goal this past week to find a bunch of functional things to fill my binder with. So far I have a Calculus barchart, a folder filled with nothing, the school’s calendar up to February, my own schedule, and the YMCA’s class schedule. It is not very satisfying, but it will have to do. So far I have consoled myself by highlighting all the important details in all my calendars with a neon pink highlighter. It helps me cope.

Also, if the internet weren’t such a creepy place, I’d totally share my highlighted calendar/schedule with you. I am rather proud of it. Google Calendar is truly a wonder to work with.

By the by, DON’T forget to watch the meteor shower tonight. I always do, and it makes me sad every August 13th. I’ve heard the best time to watch it is between midnight and dawn… check it out!

Creativity.

Creativity.

It is difficult having a creative overachieving brother.

Who does things like THIS (see below) every time there is an occasion to dress up.

halloween07
haloween09
sugarintheraw

Guess which one he is in Halloween 2007.

That’s right.

The mailbox.

The fully working mailbox.

Always the engineer, Christian is.

Halloween 2010 is going to be a wild ride. It’s a surprise, but we’re so tight that I already know what it is.

All I can say is that it’s an everyday inanimate object. And it’s going to be FULLY working.

I think I’m just gonna give up and revert to Snow White. It worked when I was 7!

Speaking of Disney princesses, did you know that the Little Mermaid is an ENFP? Just like me? I’ve kinda been into the Myer’s-Briggs thingy lately. I DON’T buy into the psychobabble, but I gotta say, that ENFP thing is preeeetttty accurate. Almost to the point of being creepy!

And also Mr. Darcy (from Pride and Prejudice) is an INTJ, which (according to the internet) is my PERFECT LIFE PARTNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I KNEW it!!! So happy about that!

Do you know what you are? Is it accurate, or not?

Hiatus and Nerds

Hiatus and Nerds

No. 1:

Betty Blonde is going on HIATUS because of school! Like officially! Ugh. I don’t like the word ‘hiatus’ because it is so indefinite and I always get mad when my favorite bloggers/cartoonists go on hiatus because they NEVER tell how long the hiatus is.  Sometimes it’s three weeks. Sometimes it’s three years.  So (for your convenience, and mine) I have made a date.

The Monday after Thanksgiving 2010, Betty Blonde WILL most definitely return.

If it doesn’t (which is highly, highly unlikely) you may kidnap me and stuff me in a creepy basement for a week. Or force feed me raw black olives. Or make me read Twilight. Or all three together, if you are very angry.

So it is in my best interest to keep Betty Blonde going after Thanksgiving!  I already have an awesome plot worked out and written down anyway, so we should be good. Also the break will give me plenty of time to get waaaaay way ahead.

I LOVE YOU ALL!! Betty Blonde does too. Perhaps she will appear randomly during the hiatus. We shall see.

No. 2:

I have been thinking about nerds. One of my most dearly beloved sub-cultures. Also I have been stereotyping. So.

In my mind there are two nerd camps.

Nerds who go to Comic-Con and nerds who like Linux.

I am mostly in the Comic-Con camp because if I were in the Nerds-who-like-Linux camp, I would probably not be calling it that.

I would probably be calling it ‘smart nerds’ or something sassy like that.

Who knows!

Granted, most nerds do not fit perfectly in one camp or the other. I know plenty of Linux nerds who enjoy graphic novels and Star Wars and the Guild. I also know not a few Comic-Con nerds who participate in the occasional programming bout.

(I’m assuming that’s what Linux nerds do… go on programming bouts and have Tux-related parties and talk about C++ and hardware and such.)

Here are the characteristics of the two nerd camps. Compiled because : A. I enjoy categorizing people. B. I enjoy making lists C. I know a lot about Linux nerds’ external qualities because my dad and my brother and my uncles and various other people who I am close to are LINUX NERDS.  Anyway:

Comic-Con Nerds:

  • Attend Comic-cons
  • Like Lord of the Rings…
  • and Star Wars/Trek…
  • and stuff like xkcd and doghouse diaries and Watchmen…
  • and dressing up as comic culture icons
  • and videogames…
  • and superheroes.
  • …and Steve Jobs.
  • and also they are fat and have ponytails… and perhaps goatees (evidence)

Linux Nerds

  • Program stuff
  • Like things such as Linux…
  • Linuxy things…
  • Gimp…
  • Cloud computing…
  • Arduinos…
  • Motherboards…
  • Open Source things…
  • Math club…
  • Tux…
  • LOLcats…
  • and buzzwords

There it is!

Got my daily stereotyping/list-making in for the day. I feel so satisfied now.
